Why 26?
Tabitha Atieno-Festo was an extraordinary woman. A widowed, unemployed nurse and mother of three living in the largest slum in East Africa, she had an idea of how she could help her community. She dreamed of creating a medical clinic in her home of Kibera.
With a $26 grant from Rye Barcott, Tabitha launched her idea – selling vegetables in a neighboring slum where she undercut the competition and over the course of a year, saved up enough money to open a 24-hour medical clinic out of her home. That medical clinic now serves over 40,000 patients a year.
$26 – such a small amount of money. But in the hands of the right person and with a community of support to amplify the impact, incredible things are possible.
